No, the dash cam will record automatically without requiring connection to your cellphone's WiFi. It continues to record as long as it has power.

This dash cam supports memory cards ranging from 32GB to 256GB. A free 64GB U3 microSD card is included in the package. If you need to buy a new one, we recommend a U3 Class 10 microSD card from a reputable brand.
